Ecosandals: The name is reminiscent of dusty types in their socks with sandals. But you take a look at the website of Ecosandals you will see a hip, flowered sandals and teenslippers collection.

They are made by people in Korogocho, a slum in Nairobi , Kenya . Korogocho is a rugged, polluted district where many Kenyans would rather not even step at daytime. Life is poor and there are few opportunities for the people who live there. Ecosandals offers them a perspective.

Through the website, Ecosandals sells sandals to thousands of people in Europe and America. All sandals and slippers are made from old tyres, sometimes combined with dust, sometimes with beads, leather or straw.

Ecosandals is an American initiative. The American employees work on a voluntary basis. None of them earns a salary. There are now about thirty Kenyans employed by Ecosandals. They make the sandals and run the company. They earn a salary and training curriculum to continue to develop. On the website you can read the stories of a few employees whose lives have been completely changed by making sandals.

So, take a look at the website and buy a couple of hip sandals. You support the people in Korogocho, you encourage the recycling of waste and you get a few nice sandals home. It seems to me a little model Han!.
